Aberconwy Constituency 2010
What's the story
This seat is target number 37 for the Conservative party. This is a new seat which is normally Labour. Betty Williams, who won Conwy for Labour last time, will not be standing again. A Gordon Brown loyalist, she said she wanted to "change the balance" of her workload. Sir Thomas Legg ordered her to repay £750.25 following his expenses review.
History
A newly created seat based on existing Conwy seat. Conwy is traditional Tory seat won by Labour in 1997, and again with a much bigger majority in 2001, through that was cut back in 2005. Labour gained it from Plaid Cymru in the Welsh assembly election of 2003, but were relegated to third as Plaid Cymru took it back in 2007.
Profile
Centred on Llandudno, Conwy town and associated suburbs such as Deganwy and Penrhyn Bay along with the Conwy Valley. The new boundaries will include Welsh-speaking rural areas, English-speaking coastal dwellers, many affluent suburbs, pockets of relative poverty, seaside resorts such as Llandudo and more industrial areas such as Llandudno Junction.
