MP Blasts Judge
Conwy MP Betty Williams has been left disfigured and still suffers pain in her arm three months after the attack in her local park at Talysarn, near Caernarfon.
Last week magistrates at Caernarfon imposed a £100 fine on the Rottweiler’s owner and ordered him to pay £365 compensation for the injury, Mrs Williams’s damaged jacket and mileage for her hospital visits. Daniel Bright, 32, a self-employed outdoor instructor, of Talysarn, admitted being the owner of a dog called Jake which was dangerously out of control in public.
The court ordered that the dog should be kept muzzled and on a lead in public and Jake was banned from the park where the attack happened. Mr Bright had to pay £85 costs and the £15 victims’ surcharge.
But Mrs Williams said she was very disappointed the dog isn’t to be put down. It went through two layers of a waterproof jacket and one of a heavy cardigan. Had it done this to a child’s neck, it would probably have been fatal.
“I’m going to be disfigured for life. I suffer pain and discomfort and can’t write for very long because of the pain,” she said. Mrs Williams is puzzled that the court ordered Jake to be muzzled after seemingly accepting the defence “basis of plea” that a claw caused the deep wound.
The MP made repeated visits to her GP and hospital. A doctor told her it was the worst bite he had ever seen. She added :“It was a serious injury. I’m concerned about the general public, as a sensible citizen. It’s only a fortnight since a four-year-old boy was killed by a dog in Liverpool.” Now she is considering what to do next
