Craig Douglas started making records on the newly formed Top Rank label in the early fifties and usually covered well known American hits by other artists. He was never the winner until his sweet light voice covered the Sam Cooke American hit " Only Sixteen" which propelled him to the top of the charts. In reality Sam Cooke, a soul singer, gave a different slant to the song and Craig Douglas's version was simpler and more innocent and therefore appealed to the British record buying public. Pretty Blue Eyes.....his other big hit, was in the same vein but appealed more than the mature Steve Lawrence's American version. Douglas was constantly in the charts late fifties and early sixties but his popular appeal disappeared with the sixties liverpool sound era. He still sometimes tours in sixties reunions but no longer releases records.
