This week, we had a different kind of NOTP - Not On The Christmas Playlist! Far from being the grumpy old Scrooge figure, I like the odd seasonal song. So a whole show of them? Why not?
Three in a Row were all wintry - Winter Melody (Donna Summer), Walk Out to Winter (Aztec Camera) and Hazy Shade of Winter (The Bangles). And Winter Wonderland because it's on Phil Spector's 'A Christmas Gift to You' and that was my featured album, of course.
We also had Gabriella Cilmi, George Frederic Handel, eels, T Rex, Nina Simone, Pet Shop Boys, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Steeleye Span, The Waitresses, The Jackson Five, Bert Jansch, Eartha Kitt, Bo'Selecta and The Beach Boys.
Charity Shop Corner revealed a real gem - the original extended version of 'Mary's Boy Child' by Mr. Harry Belafonte. How Boney M even dared to think of covering this classic is beyond belief.
Kitsch'n'Sink was (of course) '(Christmas) Baby Please Come Home' by Darlene Love from 'A Christmas Gift For You'. Written by Spector, Jeff Barry and the late Ellie Greenwich, arranged by Jack Nietzche (who also shared backing vocals with Sonny Bono) and engineered by Larry Levine who also died earlier this year. Probably my favourite Christmas song ever.
The Long Song wasn't that long, but was a nice version of 'Silent Night - Night of Silence' by Chris Squire's Swiss Choir - try saying that after a few eggnogs!
Well, all that remains for me to do is to wish you all a very happy Solstice, Christmas or whatever floats your boat. I'll be back on Tuesday 29th with a review of the year's best films and albums in my own very biased opinion. Don't forget you can influence my choice by mailing me at glyn.tudno@gmail.com.
Another artist whose main big hits come from the American charts, Helen Reddy is my next choice for the top ten rundown. Helen Reddy had enormous popularity in the seventies and eighties in America and Canada and was also recognised as an important talent in Britain with her hits "Angie Baby" and latterly Ruby Red dress. Although not having many chart successes in Europe her albums sold well. She still re3cords but now mainly for the American market. Join me next Tuesday 8-10pm on Tudnofm 107.8 or online at Tudnofm.co.uk and click on LISTEN LIVE.
And now the end is near and so on and so forth and with many apologies to Paul Anka's lyrics we reach the end of another year of Paynes Reunions and we hope you will join us next year for another round of barely contained lunacy, guests and music, Oh always the music, we'd like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year from all of us at the The Paynes Reunion Show, Goodnight from American Dave and Garry Carr.
